Created by Rotterdam-based designer Chris Kabel, Wall Space is a sculptural installation that turns Headlands’ building façade into a canvas for commissioned texts. Inspired by historical movie theater marquees, a hidden armature on the side of the building holds metal mesh letters that respond to the changing light, visible to viewers as cast shadows. The letters are reconfigured into a new poem once a year.
For this iteration of Wall Space, we are grateful to host poet, writer, art journalist and 2026 Spring Artist in Residence Eileen Myles.
Eileen Myles (they/them, b. 1949) is a poet, novelist and art journalist whose practice of vernacular first-person writing has made them one of the most recognized writers of their generation. Pathetic Literature, which they edited, came out in Fall of 22. a “Working Life”, their newest collection of poems, is out now. They live in New York & in Marfa, TX.
Wall Space Exhibition Opening
Join us in celebrating the unveiling of our new Wall Space commission by poet, writer, art journalist Eileen Myles, who was an Artist in Residence (AIR) at Headlands this Spring. Eileen has invited fellow Spring AIR cohorts Jake Rose, Maxe Crandall, and Marcus Fischer to join them in activating the Wall Space through poetry and musical performance.
We’ll also have the opportunity to hear from 2026 Summer Artist in Residence Damon Locks, a Chicago-based visual artist, educator, vocalist, and musician, who will share more about his multidisciplinary practice and the work he has been developing during his time at Headlands.
Following the artist program, we’ll gather in the Mess Hall with artists and fellow community members for Sunday Supper.
