Colleen Blackard connects external and internal landscapes through monotype printmaking, drawing, and installation. Her artwork blends landscape and myth to create an otherworld for viewers to enter. As part of her process, she travels to remote sites and creates artwork to share her experiences of these places with the local community and abroad. Her installations envision humans as part of nature, belonging to the landscape, creating a space to contemplate this relationship.

During her Project Space Residency, she will re-enter the Marin Headlands to search for a tree she met there as a child. Constantly battered by the wind and endlessly reappearing through rolling fog, it was slightly bent with its moss-covered roots anchored to the hillside. Its resilience inspired a sense of peace that anchors her to this day. She will also imagine this meeting from the tree’s perspective, contemplating the experience of a tree adapted to survive such a dramatic environment. Utilizing the studio as a canvas, she will build a living landscape of layered drawings and paintings to re-envision this memory, adding and subtracting elements throughout her stay, creating an otherworldly space of tree dreams and memories for viewers to enter.

Project Space is on the third floor of Building 944 and is currently accessible only by stairs.
