Artist Statement

I am a multidisciplinary artist known for large-scale, material-based constructions that merge fine art, folk art, and design. My practice explores the concepts of home and belonging while engaging with themes of dependency, fragility, and alienation. The form of the painting expands into objects, architectural spaces, and tactile surfaces that partially replace traditional paint. Emotional—even awkward—handwoven constructions interact with painted or industrially produced surfaces, revealing how human imperfection is both protected and challenged within complex, shifting environments. Together, these elements form what I call a psycho-material matrix, mirroring the human body—which is shaped, sustained, and nurtured within its surroundings.

While At Headlands

Painting, weaving and the use of found objects open up distinct ways of thinking. During the residency, I will build a portable loom to work both in the studio and outdoors. I will focus on developing my artistic language and continue my research on painting as a space- and time-based, multidimensional object. I will conduct tests and experiments with different materials, thematic ideas, and compositions. I will read, listen, observe, collect, and reflect; meet fellow artists and visitors; engage with cultural venues; experience nature and the weather; and immerse myself in new surroundings.

I work intuitively, so I cannot always predict where a project will lead, but I recognise its direction. As a Finnish artist working within a small nation and a limited art scene, it is essential for me to reach beyond familiar traditions, beliefs, and patterns.
