Artist Statement

Over the past 15 years, I have re-imagined images that friends and strangers uploaded to social media by building up heavy acrylic surfaces and other materials to create sculptural paintings. My subjects have included food photos, make-up tutorials, bodybuilder selfies, memes and consumer domestic goods.

I see my role as an artist is to be completely honest about what I’m looking at. Just as a realist painter 200 years ago might have set themself up in a field to depict the views around them, I have spent more than a decade mining images from the second world in which we increasingly live. Screens may be flat, but the online world feels very dimensional to me.

While At Headlands

I am excited to spend my time at Headlands working on works on paper, small and large, unstretched canvas and small panel works continuing ideas for my Sculptural Paintings. I have been working on works inspired by domestic goods advertised to my online, sheets, towels, fabrics and I am excited to see how the Headlands landscape impacts those investigations as well as how the cultural impact of working in the Bay Area and among so many other Artists in the Headland’s community will influence the work.
