Artist Statement

In my recent body of work, I continue my exploration of balance and dependent opposition. Utilizing a mixture of realism and minimalist abstraction, I create a narrative between pictorial reality, artistic process, and formal composition. The result is a dialogue that can at once be interpreted as playful in practice yet earnest in execution.

While At Headlands

While at Headlands I will continue my exploration of painting and photography. Although painting is my primary focus, I have expanded my practice to include photography during my first year. I would like to spend my second year as a Headlands Affiliate to further explore those two paths. I would continue to photograph Building 828 and its surrounding area in a format that would allow me to work both on a smaller scale and a monumental scale, the latter that I would accomplish by using a large format field camera. I envision merging painting into the photography or incorporating large scale photographs into my painting process. The result might be a piece that seems to be a photograph, but upon further investigation, has qualities that are physical in nature and reveal a process that goes far beyond a printed image.
