Artist Statement

Working at the intersection of drag and theatrical self-portraiture, I design and construct historical scenarios that are staged for the production of faux-documentary films and photographs. Centered on queering the experience of history, my fictitious archival images and their corresponding curatorial texts interweave scholarship and creativity, imagination and historical accuracy, in a process of queer storytelling.

My recent works grapple with the lived experiences and inherited memories that hail me as queer, those sensory understandings and their intensely idiosyncratic effects that persist in my body. My projects interweave my academic research on questions of legacy and historical knowing. I am particularly interested in the ways histories are handed down, the ways that we become implicated in the repercussions and reverberations of that which came before us, and the ways we ourselves in turn embody and hand down these histories yet again.

While At Headlands

During my time at Headlands I will develop a new intermedia project grounded in personal reflections on queer genealogy, ancestral memory, and local histories embedded in family archives.
