Artist Statement

COMMONStudio is an itinerant collaborative practice of Daniel Phillips and Kim Karlsrud, which explores the complex human and natural ecologies of the urban landscape. Our recent work in Los Angeles, Rome, Budapest, and Bangalore investigates a range of urban issues including novel ecosystems, urban sensory experiences, and social processes which we explore through writing, object-making, and landscape installations. By recognizing cities as complex and hybridized ecosystems, we seek to understand and creatively facilitate overlaps between the human and the non-human, the domesticated and the feral, the visible and the invisible forces that actively shape life on an increasingly urbanized planet.

While at Headlands

By recognizing the physical proximity of Headlands to the city of San Francisco, and exploring the landscape conditions at the periphery of both, our goal is to understand the ecological dialogs that exist between the urban and the rural through the lens of various plant communities and ecosystems. This exploration will include conversations, walks, material collection, curation, interpretation, and synthesis over the course of one month.
