Artist Statement
I’m a playwright and screenwriter who is driven to find effective ways to represent difficult realities, both internal and external. While I am obsessed with actual reality, I don’t think of my work as necessarily naturalistic. I strive to make things real, but in a way in which desire, complexity, and contradiction are intensified beyond the directly observable. My concerns are as much social as they are psychological, and I try to make work that shows that one does not exist without the other.
While At Headlands
I anticipate working on a new play at Headlands. No matter how developed an idea is in my mind, I have found that it takes the shape it wants to take when I begin writing. I have also found that talking publicly with any specificity about new ideas tends to rob them of some essential energy. Reading, meditating, and spending time in nature are core components of creating something new for me, so in addition to writing, that is what I will be doing at Headlands.
