Artist Statement
My practice involves translating sound, language, and narratives into visual expressions. Throughout these projects, key elements are modes of translation between sound and image and collaboration, not only with people, but with the research, and the objects. In the process of creation, I am aware of the concept of abreaction — the extraction of dormant memory stored within a muscle, resurfaced through physical movement.
While At Headlands
While at Headlands, I plan to continue a series of prints depicting silence via the method of gauffrage where embossed notations indicate silence, inspired by the Japanese printing technique karazuri where printing without ink indicates “empty.” Depicting silence through this means feels appropriate, as silence denotes no sound, but can in fact be very pronounced, and therefore, loud, as it sits in the environment, or rather, on a page.
