Artist Statement

My work merges painting with textile-based processes, drawing, weaving, sewing, dyeing, and embroidery, to create hybrid forms that move between surface and structure. Everything begins with drawing, my method of unlocking embodied knowledge from a private, primal aquifer. Oscillating between abstraction and representation, these shapes suggest bodies, architectures, and emotional states without resolving into fixed images. Forms migrate from paper to fabric to canvas, where they are cut, stitched, stretched, and painted upon, becoming both image and support.

I am interested in how labor registers in a finished object: how time, care, and bodily knowledge remain visible rather than concealed. Drawing from textile histories and abstraction, my work resists hierarchies between fine art and craft. The compositions hold tension between softness and containment, vulnerability and strength. These works ask viewers to slow down, encountering seams, surfaces, and shifts in color as evidence of touch and sustained attention.

While At Headlands

While at Headlands, I will establish a daily rhythm of hiking and drawing, using sustained observation to bring the shapes of nature and spatial relationships into my body. Drawing is a somatic process for me; pulling from a primal aquifer of stored life experiences. These drawings will inform a new body of textile-based paintings, where I translate this embodied knowledge through cutting, piecing, and layering dyed, woven, and sourced fabrics into constructed compositions. The residency’s expansive landscape and uninterrupted time will allow me to deepen this cycle between experience, drawing, and making. I am also eager to experiment with residency as a shared family structure. My husband, a musician, and my child, who instinctively makes art, will be present, creating a space where sound, image, and play coexist, and where creative attention becomes integrated into daily life.
