Headlands Center for the Arts

Artist Statement

Atmosphere is my primary material. I create films, photographs, sculptures, sound works, and installations that explore how invisible forces become perceptible. Drawing on themes from Black ecology, Creole histories, atmospheric science, spirit-jazz and early cinema, I stage microclimates where media, music, and myth converge. Weather processes such as oxidation, evaporation, condensation, and biological entrainment inspire me and help structure my work into collages of dynamic systems. My installations exist at the crossroads of metaphysics, archive, and ecosystem, where latent histories and unseen forces gradually reveal themselves through the interactions between light, water, sound, media and atmosphere.

While at Headlands

While at Headlands, I will continue my research in electromagnetism, optical illusions, water features, music, perfumery, and photography. I’m especially excited to learn more about the region’s microclimates and observe the interplay between tides and coastal fog.
