Artist Statement

By design, A Gang of Three operates within an ever-evolving gradient of public art, architecture, landscape architecture, installation, urban planning, ecology, and advocacy. We leverage our unique perspectives and strengths to tackle such critical issues as human rights, climate change, resilience, social justice, data, remembrance, and migration, among others.

We intentionally use natural systems, materials, wayfinding, graphic design, and planning as ethereal yet critical tools to set conditions for people to engage with our work in entirely new ways during each visit – and by doing so, progressively opening their eyes to new possibilities.

We believe this nuanced approach helps to break down cultural and ideological barriers, allowing for meaningful understanding to occur.

Ultimately, we seek to do great work that makes a difference.

While At Headlands

In the summer of 2025, we were enthusiastically selected by the Malta Biennale for a proposed project calling attention to ongoing censorship efforts within the United States – specifically based on verified research by the NY Times, The Guardian, etc. Ironically, this very same project was later itself censored and its exhibition canceled with no clear explanation (although it was obvious that their curators experienced political pressure from their government to do so).

Recently, it has come to light that Malta’s Prime Minister aspires to join Trump’s “Board of Peace,” and has been informally invited to do so, further clarifying the circumstances around our project cancellation.

While the irony is palatable, this situation has only increased the project’s importance. We will be working on this (and others) during our time at Headlands.
