With the Grain: Wood Sculpting with Jesse Schlesinger

With a unique sensitivity to site, structures, and natural materials, artist and woodworker Jesse Schlesinger (AIR ’12) will lead an informal session on how to craft small sculptural objects from locally milled cypress. Come experience the natural tendencies of the organic materials at hand, while learning tips and tricks for basic joinery and tool use. Schlesinger will lead participants through the nuances of his own process and craft, including his specific interest in the ethics of making, and how joinery can be seen as a material metaphor for “being together”. Instruction will be given on how to bring these aesthetic and embodied approaches to bear through project conceptualization, layout, and final execution of a small, take-home sculpture. Beginning or aspiring woodworkers and hand-crafters at any level are invited.
