Jillian McDonald finds unique ways to engage the general public in artistic acts, and most recently, has created a body of video work that focuses on “the American cult of celebrity, the fantasy that buoys extreme fandom, and the mechanisms of fear as entertainment at work in horror films.” Whether she is sewing protective messages in peoples’ favorite clothing items or inserting herself into romantic film scenes starring actor Billy Bob Thornton, McDonald carefully manipulates real and fictitious scenarios and inspires people to consider their various obsessions and how they fit into the larger fabric of popular culture. Some of her recent solo shows and projects include Moti Hasson Gallery, NY; The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery; ArtMoving Projects and vertexList, Brooklyn; and exhibitions at The Whitney Museum's Artport; Year Zero One, Toronto; Manifestation d'Art Internationale de Québec, 404 International Festival of Electronic Art; Argentina; and La Biennale de Montréal. McDonald received a BFA in Drawing/Combined Media from the University of Manitoba School of Art, Canada, and an MFA in Combined Media from Hunter College, NY.
