Joan Perlman’s aesthetic concerns are paralleled in the extreme conditions of the volcanic Icelandic landscape. Its spare beauty, colors and powerful geothermal effects have inspired her paintings, drawings and video work for over a decade. Perlman has exhibited nationally and in Europe at venues such as Hafnarborg Museum, Reykjavík, Iceland; David Cunningham Projects, San Francisco; Long Beach Museum of Art, CA; and the Santa Monica Museum of Art. Perlman is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Durfee Foundation, and two cultural grants from the American Embassy. Her work is in the collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (Achenbach Foundation); Musée d’Art Américain Giverny, France/Terra Foundation for the Arts; Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley; and many private collections. Perlman lives in Los Angeles.
