Born in China, Hung Liu grew up in Beijing during the time of the Chinese Communist Revolution. Trained as a social realist painter and muralist, Liu came to the United States in 1984 to continue her studies at the University of California, San Diego, where she received her MFA in Visual Arts. One of the first people from mainland China to study abroad and pursue an art career, she moved to northern California in 1990 to become a faculty member at Mills College, where she still teaches. Liu has exhibited internationally at premier museums and galleries, and her work resides in private and institutional collections around the world. She currently lives in Oakland.
