Jewlia Eisenberg composes for the voice as an instrument, using her training as an extended-technique vocalist to investigate translation and non-verbal communication. At present, she is developing a work inspired by inscribed texts on Babylonian incantation bowls dating back 1500 years. Previous compositions and recordings with her group, Charming Hostess, have incorporated a range of Jewish, Balkan and African traditions. . Eisenberg was the recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation Grant; a Trust for Mutual Understanding Grant for collaboration with poets in the former Yugoslavia; and holds a BA from UC Berkeley.
