The Tournesol Award The Tournesol Award was established by an anonymous donor to recognize one emerging painter each year, and to support them in taking the crucial first steps towards establishing their career in the Bay Area. The award includes a $10,000 cash stipend, a studio (live-out) residency for one year at Headlands and a solo exhibition at a Bay Area venue at the end of this period. The goal is to provide the artist with the financial and community support to assist their artistic development in the critical first years after school. By supporting artists at an early stage in their careers, the sponsors hope to contribute to the vitality of the Bay Area's artistic community. Past awardees: Chris Ballantine, Ana Teresa Fernandez, Yoon Lee, Clare E. Rojas, Leslie Shows & Paul Wackers.
Artist eligibility in 2010 is restricted to the following: * works primarily with painting and drawing/works on paper * resides in the Bay Area * graduated from an accredited MFA program within the past five years (2005-2010)
Headlands Affiliate Artist Program Headlands rents studios to Bay Area artists and arts professionals working in visual arts, writing, performance, interdisciplinary arts, film, video & digital media for periods of up to two years.
The Affiliate Artist studios are located in Fort Barry Building 960, an artist-renovated, historic former military building with three levels and twenty studios in total. Studios range from approximately 100 square feet to 500 square feet and currently rent for $.85 per square foot. Studios are equipped with electricity and heating, though temperatures are typically cool in the winter. Artists pay a flat fee for utilities, which is added to the rent.
Artists are selected based on the quality of their work and their interest in working at Headlands. Each year, selections are made in May by a panel of artists and arts professionals and studios are available to new Affiliates as early as June.
